Visit Maine – Vacationland

Maine has tons of things to offer for those looking for fun family vacations.  I have lived here all my life and I must say it has some of the most beautiful scenery from the Appalachian Mountains to Maine’s rocky coastline.  Whether you are looking for a summer vacation or a winter vacation, Maine truly has something for everybody.

If you are looking for a combination of a beach vacation and amusement parks then the Saco/Old Orchard Beach area is a great place to look.  Saco is home to two of Maine’s great amusement parks – Fun Town USA and Aquaboggan.

Fun Town has some great rides for kids of all ages as well as a water park.  Aquaboggan is Maine’s Original Water Park.  It has been providing great family fun for over 30 years.  It has numerous water slides, bumper boats, a giant wave pool, and much more.  Saco is also home to one of Maine’s drive-in movie theaters.  This is a great idea for the kids and adults alike.

Old Orchard Beach is just a hop, skip and a jump away from Saco.  It has been a summer tourist attraction for many years.  Take a stroll on the seven mile beach or have some fun at Palace Playland and The Dream Machine.  Grab a bite to eat on the boardwalk or check out the pier.

If you are looking for a cheap family vacation, you can find plenty of campgrounds to choose from.  They are literally everywhere from York to Bar Harbor to Oxford Hills and everywhere in between.  I have always loved taking the kids camping.  It is a great way to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle.

Bar Harbor is another great family destination.  There are many lodging options including camping, hotels, and cottages.  Be sure to visit Acadia National Park and do some hiking on the many scenic trails that offer some great views of Maine’s beautiful coastline.  Take the kids on a whale watching adventure and be sure to take a drive up Cadillac Mountain.

When planning family vacations, Maine may not be on everyone’s list but it should be.  Summer and spring offer some great outdoor weather for beaches and hiking while autumn can provide some of the most beautiful foliage.  Winter offers some of the best skiing in New England with multiple ski resorts to choose from including Sunday River and Sugarloaf.  Maine is one of the few places that truly has four seasons with something for everybody.
